Known as “Young Hickory”, James Polk was a Presbyterian and our 11th President. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1818 and was in the Democratic Party. It was not uncommon for Presidents to develop strain injuries from constant hand shaking, but Polk had a technique that allowed him to shake hands without any complications. The treaty of 1848 with Mexico gave the U.S. control over California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. His wife, Sarah Polk banned card-playing, dancing, and alcoholic beverages in the White House during his term.
