Known as “Young Hickory of the Granite Hills,” Franklin Pierce was our 14th President and an Episcopalian, A Laywer, and a Democrat. He ran against Winfield Scott and won by a landslide-receiving 254 electoral votes - leaving Scott with only 42. Pierce supposedly ran over an elderly woman with his horse and was arrested while in office–the charges eventually dropped. Pierce was the first President to have a Christmas tree in the Whitehouse and he was known for his dramatically large hairstyles. Shortly before Pierce was inaugurated, he was in a train accident with his wife and son–is wife survived, but his only child, his son, died. He died from liver damage because of his heavy drinking.
