Ulysses S. Grant graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1843 and was nicknamed “Hero of Appomattox.” Grant’s real name was “Hiram Ulysses Grant”. He changed it because he didn’t want to enter West Point with the initials “H.U.G. He was a soldier, a Republican, and a Methodist. He was known to smoke about 20 cigars in one day, and his battle with throat cancer made the American Public aware of this disease. Ten years after he was President, Ulysses Grant was stricken with throat cancer. He regularly swabbed his throat with cocaine, becoming addicted to it. Grant was distant cousins with both President Cleveland and President Franklin Roosevelt. Grant was 5 ft. 8 inches tall and wanted to be a Professor of Mathematics. Grant was the first President to have both parents alive when he took office.
